What the Lions are "Doing"...
  • Webelos2 2015-2016 First Den Meeting is on October 8th
...Note:  Hockey Game date has been corrected (the game is On November 29th (Sunday - 2pm)

    Hi everyone,
Now that the first few of weeks of school are behind us, we're getting going with the 2015-2016 Webelo2 program for our cubscouts!

This year we'll be completing the Arrow of Light requirements to fully prepare the boys to move into boy scouts after the blue and gold banquet in March, 2016.

Tracy and I have updated the calendar on our website (www.pack1014.org) with upcoming meetings.  (we are den 3)

This year our den meetings will be held on Thursday nights at Eastover (starting at 6:30, with finish times around 7:45p or so).  Our first Den meeting will be on October 8th!.

We also have some activities planned for a couple of weekend days as well.  Weekend events include:

    • Rocket Camp (D-Bar-A)  (Oct 17th-18th)
    • Afternoon at the West Bloomfield Adventure Park (Oct 31st)
    • Afternoon at the Nature Center (Nov 14th):
    • Overnight at Cranbrook institue of Science (Nov 20th)
    • Detroit Redwings hockey game (Nov 29th - 2pm)  - Note Corrected Date
    • Skiing at Pine Knob (Feb - exact day TBA)

    Rocket Camp:
Troop 1005 (based out of Christ Cranbrook Church) has invited us to join them at D-Bar over the weekend of October 17-18th for a Rocket Camp!   This is a great opportunity and will a great experience for the boys and I encourage everyone to participate if at all possible.  (taking part in a boy scout camp (like this one) is actually one of the pre-requisites to obtain the arrow of light).  During the day we'll be building/launching rockets, completing some required Webelos2 achievements, and participating in boy scout activities.   On Saturday night of this camp, we'll also enjoy the Haunted Forest.

Costs are nominal, at $5.00. Parents should plan on joining their son over the weekend if at all possible  (cabin space is available for parents if you don't want to sleep in a tent) - if you cannot attend with your son for the weekend, please let me know. so that I can arrange transportation, etc.
During our 1st Den meeting (October 8th) representatives from Troop 1005 will be at our meeting to give more details about the camp - please plan on attending this first den meeting to get more information.
    .

On Saturday October 31st (@1:30), we have an opportunity to try out the West Bloomfield Adventure Park rope and zipline courses!  This course is a ton of fun, appropriate for all age levels, and the event is open to Webelos2 and their families.  Please RSVP to me by October 12th.  Costs per person is $31.00.

    Den meetings:
Tracy and I will be sending out reminder emails a couple of days before each den meeting with an outline of planned activities.  For each den meeting we would like everyone to bring their Webelos book and have your boys dress in their class A uniform (tan boy scout shirt or blue cub scout shirt) + neckerchief and slide.

We will be covering key Webelos2 Arrow Of Light achievements during our den meetings, but I encourage each boy to work at home on any other achievements/pins that are of interest to them.  As your son completes achievements, Tracy or myself will be signing off completion in their respective Webelos handbooks.

    Popcorn sales:
Reminder!  We have started our annual popcorn sales fundraiser - under separate cover you should have all received general information about the sale (from our cubmaster or from Bill Sprague)  and invitations to participate in weekend store sales (they start this weekend!).  Please sign up for whatever  time your son can!  I've also attached a copy of the popcorn order form your convenience.

Ok, that's all for now... Question, Queries, Quibbles, Comments, or Concerns, please shoot me a note,.
    Thanks,
    Eero Laansoo

  • Welcome to Webelos1 -Den 3

    Welcome to Webelos -Den 3

In preparation for the upcoming Webelos scout year (starting in just a few weeks-I'll be sending out a different note with details of days and times), I wanted to take a moment to give a high-level overview of the Webelos program, request a helping hand to plan, run, or participate in some of the meetings, and go over some of the difference in this program as compared to other Cub Scout years (Bears, Wolves, Tigers).

The Webelos program is different from the Tiger, Wolf, and Bear programs in several ways:

    • Webelos is a transitional program between Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. During the next year and a half, we will be doing more traditional scout skills like first aid, fitness, outdoor skills, and scout craft (knots and things like that).
    • Instead of working on achievements, your son will be earning activity badges. The badges are vocation and interest oriented.
    • We will spend the first few months working on the Webelos badge. After the Scouts earn that badge, they will be working on their Arrow of Light award.

    What Are Activity Badges?

Webelos work on Activity badges. When your son completes the requirements for a badge, he will receive a pin to wear on his uniform. There are twenty activity badges which are grouped into five different groups:

    • Physical Skills Group: Aquanaut, Athlete, Fitness, and Sportsman
    • Technology Group: Craftsman, Engineer, Handyman, and Scientist
    • Mental Skills Group: Artist, Scholar, Showman, and Traveler
    • Outdoor Group: Forester, Geologist, Naturalist, and Outdoorsman
    • Community Group: Citizen, Communicator, Family Member, and Readyman

The requirements for the badges can be found in your son’s Webelos handbook. If you have any expertise in any of these areas, then your help with the badge would be greatly appreciated. Or maybe you have a relative or friend who could come to one of our meetings and give a presentation related to the badge we are working on.

How Does My Son Earn the Webelos Badge?

    • He must learn some things about Webelos and Boy Scouts
    • He will lead a flag ceremony
    • He must complete the Faith components of the requirements.
    • He must earn the Fitness activity badge, the Citizen activity badge, and one other activity badge from the Technology, Mental Skills, or Outdoor group.
    • You must read the Parent’s Guide in the front of the Webelos handbook and sign the book to indicate you have read it.. This is one of the requirements for the badge.

We will try to do most of the requirements during meetings, but he might have to do some things at home also. Our goal is for all of the Scouts in our den to complete the Webelos badge requirements by February of their first Webelos year.

How Does My Son Earn the Arrow of Light Award?

    • He must earn his Webelos badge first.
    • He will need to earn the Outdoorsman activity badge, the Readyman activity badge, and three more activity badges – including one from the Mental Skills group and one from the Technology group. These must be in addition to the activity badges he earned for the Webelos badge requirements.
    • He must continue to learn about Boy Scouts.
    • He must do some camping or hiking.
    • He must visit the Boy Scout troop with you and talk to the Scoutmaster.
    • There are a few other requirements also.

Once again, we will try to do most of the requirements during our meetings. Our goal is for all of the Scouts in our den to complete the Arrow of Light requirements by January of their second Webelos year.

Why Is the Arrow of Light Award Important?

The Arrow of Light award is the highest award a Cub Scout can earn. In addition, boys who have earned the Arrow of Light can join the Boy Scout troop even if they are only 10 years old. If he doesn’t earn the Arrow of Light, he cannot join the troop until he is 11.

Working on this award is also important because it prepares your son to be a Boy Scout. The Boy Scout program is much different than the Cub Scout program. The experience your son gains while working on his Arrow of Light award will help him transition smoothly into the Boy Scout troop.

    The Webelos Uniform

Webelos can continue to wear the dark blue Cub Scout shirt or they can wear the tan Boy Scout shirt. There is no need to go out and purchase a tan shirt right away, but if your son is outgrowing his dark blue shirt, purchase the tan shirt as a replacement. Then he can continue to wear the tan shirt when he joins the Boy Scout troop.

I look forward to seeing everyone in September for our first den meeting!
    -Eero
